In the first three RE games, the characters seem to have an obsession with being apart as often as possible. Now, I know it's what works best for the game dynamics, but it makes absolutely no sense in practical terms.
If you were in a place surrounded by thousands of monsters, you would want to stick as close as possible to whatever survivors you could find. Going apart and having little separate adventures would be the dumbest thing one could do. Why do the characters insist on doing this?

Isn't that the case in almost every movie and game .
But like you said, being alone adds to the scariness of the game. In RE0 and RE5 they didn't split up though.

True, although in DSC you always have to do something for your partner at least once per chapter....and they talk a lot

i think thats a litle bit of a cliche, but i think capcom maked the characters always split up because the game stays a litle bit more tense if you are alone, after all resident evil is a survival horror game, also for gameplay reasons cheers

Silent hill and Alone in the dark had it spot on. You where actually alone and you had to survive with the bear essentials to stay alive. I mean AITD you had two characters but no matter what one you choice you where alone in a really hostile environment. Especially when you first start the game and have nothing, Edward had a gun but rarely did you find ammo and the gun didn't hold much. Aline had nothing in the beginning and you just had to scream and run through the first parts.
I loved that game was true survival horror and damn scary. The game mechanics where a little choppy and somtimes the camera angles where not static, they where the parts that annoyed the shit out of you because you literally couldn't see a thing.
I miss original survival horror. I want a game out that actually brings back true survival horror.

In some cases they didn't have much of a choice. Like in RE2 with both Leon and Claire, that truck separated them and they had to find a place to meet up at. Easiest one being the RPD.
But having them apart does add to the fear and as we've seen with newer games having a partner doesn't really help you out anyway as there isn't much they do to help you out hardly.
And that Alone in the Dark game sounds interesting. Think I'll look it up and check it out. Kinda makes me think of Obscure or Fatal Frame. Both of those are also pretty scary.

Well there's your answer right there.
Obviously it's more scary alone.

Yeah it is pretty freaky. The first one that used to be for the pc is what started survival horror. Make sure you get the Alone in the dark: the new nightmare, it is for the ps1/pc. I think they also ported it the ps2 as well. Anyway its worth a play if you love survival horror

Then you need to play Amnesia and Penumbra.
Silent Hill has also been pretty consistent with the horror genre, although you do meet other people in those games too.

Yeah I have and still play Amnesia and Penumbra, they are serious contenders in the survival horror genre. Never been afraid in all my life. Yeah silent hill always been the same which is why I love it. I just want a real break through, you know. I dont know really what I want but I just want a new survival horror that will have me playing for years to come.

Wouldn't Amnesia and Penumbra be just that? There's 4 Penumbra games, Amnesia has lot's of fan made and official extra scenarios and it's even having a sequel.

I don't know about you guys, but Jill's playthrough in REmake is really scary. Unlike Chris', you get to be tended by Rebecca and you frequently see her.
Jill was more alone compared to Chris. Barry didn't seem like a nice company at all.
In my oinion anyway.
