Subject: I got the Yellow Light of Death on my PS3 Sun Oct 09, 2011 2:52 pm
Earlier today I was playing RE4 and all of a sudden my PS3 freezes, then proceeds to shut down by itself. I think looked at the power light and it was blinking red. I try to restart it and it stays green for a minute, flashes yellow, then goes back to blinking red. I checked Sony's site and they said the only way to fix it is to send it in for repair for $150. I have no idea what I'm going to do. If anyone has had this happen to them before I'd really appreciate the help.

that happened with my old ps3, it was till in its warranty though so i swapped it over

I tried the trick that is said to fix the problem and it did. For a week.
Then I sent my PS3 to a game store to get fixed and it works perefectly now.

Since I'm pretty sure my warranty is up (I got my PS3 back in like 2008) I'm going to just take it apart and fix it myself since I don't wanna shell out $150 to have Sony fix it.

I didn't have Sony to fix it either, I just took it to a gaming store where they knew what to do.

Of course they still charged for it. There's nothing you can get free nowadays. It just cost less than sending it to Sony.

When I got mine fixed they gave me a warranty for that. They said only one out of a few hundred fixed ones break again.

Just wanted to update you guys that I fixed it. Me and a friend of mine took it apart completely and solved the problem. My PS3 is currently up and running.

I followed this three part YouTube tutorial. Basically what I did was completely strip my PS3 down to the CPU and GPU, cleaned off the old thermal compound, and applied a new layer of it on the CPU and GPU, then put my PS3 back together.
