YLOD beaten!

Got the YLOD today. At first I thought I was fucked but thank God one of my friends happens to be a computer expert so I called him. Took a couple of hours and the thing is fixed! I was afraid I'd have to either pay the 130€ to get it fixed or buy me a new PS3 AND a PS2.

What did he do? Didn't he have to solder some parts? Unfortunately, "fixing" the ylod is never permanent. Sad

He used a heat gun and some thermal grease. While he was at that I also cleaned the parts of dust.

I've heared it's not permanent, although I hope it doesn't happen again too soon.

the 60GB PS3 is notorious for YLOD compared to the other models. i have the 160GB very low chance to get it

I still love me some 60 gig PS3. I don't want to buy a PS2 again. At least I saved on the repair fees.

yea 60gb PS3 is still the best, also beacuse it has that nice chrome finish Wink

4 usb slots and that spot where you can place SD memory, and 3 more slots for different cards

I'm purposely not send my 60gig back. I'm just buying a new one and keeping the 60gig for my game room when I get a house.

You know, after we ripped the thing apart and started heating it, my friend said that the thermal grease that had been originally used on the thing was rubbish. It shouldn't dry out to be the dust it was. He also said that this might be the reason for some YLODs, as it doesn't do it's job very efficiently. I'd recommend changing the thermal grease within your system if you ever get heating problems.

Your friend is right. And actually, the grease is the cause of almost every YLOD. Not just some, most.

He used some good stuff he happened to have with him so I'm confident it'll stay good for a while. I wonder why Sony tried to save on such a thing.

Still, the grease isn't that expensive itself. It's just weird that they decided to go even cheaper with that.

It may have been a mistake. Like maybe they didn't expect it to break down like it does. Even with this, the old 60gigs are far more reliable than any 360. Razz

On a brighter note, my PS3 will be here tomorrow! I got the $300 320 gig Infamous 2 bundle. I'm excited!!! You should look into this Mass. I got mine on Amazon.com.

Does the YLOD happen a lot or is it kind of rare ?
I have a 60gig and dont want to lose it, as I heard they are rare to get a hold of now.
Every console company always uses shortcuts so they can still keep the price high but the materials are
shoddy.
Although Nite is right, sometime its the fact that they will think a part will work fine even though its cheap,
but in time it fails.
Also got to remember they have a bduget to build a system on, they cant go wild with the money,
hence why every parts not top of the range tech, like a PC.
I still like consoles but nearlly done building my gaming Rig, its sweet and im getting sick of consoles and just
the hardware they run.
Gaming PC's are far better investments.

It's most common with the older models. It's pretty rare with the newer ones.

If you are okay in tampering with your console I would suggest you open up your PS3 after a while, clean it and change the thermal grease. It really gathers a lot of dust inside which contributes to overheating.

The 60gig is notorious for it. It sucks, because it's the best version. The new ones are almost impervious to the YLoD. Very very rare.

I'm getting an Elite soon, a custom painted one. Right now I'm literally
trying to design the deadmau5 logo with the Skrillex logo going through it.

I decided to get a 360 because I know I will still get to play with you guys
on the PS3. Through the fact that a friend of mine from school, who is also kind of my
guitar tutor, bought me Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition for the 360. So then my brother
could get busy on that one whilst I'm stealing your kills on the PS3.

Getting my PS3 back soon! I visited the store when I happened to be around and they told me it was sent back late this week so it should be here propably tomorrow.
