Not an exact in-game representation, but it basically conveys the point.

And before anyone screams "machine guns waste too many bullets"...

A. It's an assault carbine, not a machine gun (there is a difference)
B. It's fully capable of accurate semi-automatic operation.

wich is 5.56mm(less than a .22 '-.-,i know its a bit bigger but the bullet stilll ridiculously small),theres also 7.62mm wich is a bit better(g3 familly,ak47,ak101,akm,m14...,all good)as i said im a fan of bigger calibers wich dont just wound the target and litterally blow his brain(or whatever you aim at)off.

i dont necessary want to start a poll about this but i wanted to tell my point about it,and I assume theres people who like those weapons.

When a 9mm round to the head will put a zombie down for good, I doubt caliber would be an issue. And the smaller round would be lighter, enabling you to carry more ammo. Add that to the larger magazine capacity (30 rounds in an AR mag vs 20 rounds in a standard M14 mag), the lighter weight of an M4 compared to a G3 or M14, the increased accuracy over an AK (not the most accurate weapon ever made), and I'm not really seeing a downside. 5.56 NATO isn't as underpowered as bureaucrats may want you to think, and it definitely hits harder than civilian .223.

7.62 in an AK is smaller than 7.62 in an M14, BTW, in case you didn't know that.

I did say it wasn't an exact representation. An M4A1 is an M4A1, whether it has a rail interface system or not. And just because the one above is painted in ACUPAT, it doesn't mean the components were constructed like that.

But because the M4 in RE3 has a forward handgrip on it, it more than likely has an RIS, though it may not be visually represented (I'm referring to the in-game carbine. The one shown with Carlos in the manual has the standard M4 double heatshield handguards).

But, anyway, yeah, let's stay on topic with fave guns here (sorry, mods/admins).

Thinking about Barry's revolver just made me remember the special outfit you can get for Claire in RE2 (that is if you can kill zombie Brad before entering the police station and get the key for the locker in the photo room)...the outfit comes with a great quick-draw .45 revolver...ol' Claire handles that revolver like the best-of-the-west! Another great weapon from the RE universe.

Oh man, I had completely forgotten, you get the key for the alternate outfits, thanks for the reminder, and that was a nice revolver too, it shot really fast, just like Revolver Ocelot.

Actually, that revolver was only 9mm. I just played with it last night. But I see the point you're making, though.

Yeah, but the developers got the caliber wrong, same with the sub machine gun.

In reality, the SSA is chambered in .45 Long Colt and the in-game subgun (Ingram MAC-11, I think) chambered in .45 ACP.
