How to solve the gas room puzzle in REmake

In the REmake, there's a puzzle where you need to move 4 suits of armor to get a death mask and I want to know how to solve it. I know there are various FAQs that explain how to beat the puzzle but I want to know how you are supposed to solve it, and there are no guides there. How do you solve the puzzle and how do you work out the solution?

the correct order is in the pictures of the armors in the back.

Yeah, but how do I figure out the correct order? I tried going from left-to-right, but that didn't work.

IIRC, push the:

1. Top right
2. Bottom left
3. Bottom right

Then the last one, the top left, should retract automatically.

You don't need to, I just told you the solution.

To be fair, I prefer to know why somehing is done in a certain way too. Sometimes it's just pure luck and sometimes it's just logic but when there is a clear answer, I'd like to know it. I would tell you how to figure it out myself if I actually had played the remake that far.

I'm like Mass Destruction, I just want to know how to arrive at the solution as well as knowing what the solution is.

I solved it using trial and error in about a minute. I didn't even occur to me to look for a clue explaining how to solve it.

It isn't called "trial and error" anymore when you already know the solution.

@Zeolite - That is how you solve any puzzle in the RE games, you have to look for clues, either in your environment or within in a file.
Well I say all puzzle in Resident Evil but no amount of puzzles could solve RE3 fricking water purification puzzle !
I still bang my head thinking about that puzzle.
That is purely trial and error or logic, but you do have to be at it for a while in order to get it spot on.

I honestly didn't have much of a trouble with the water puzzle. I thought it had way more logic to it than the stupid oil puzzle in CV. That one isn't hard, it's just stupid. Had I not mashed the buttons I wouldn't even have figured out how to do it.
